Let Go of the Brand

Your brand isn't moving. And before you blame the agency you're paying to move it, I'll say the part most people won't: the agency might not be the problem. You might be.
I don't mean that as an insult. I mean it as the most useful thing anyone could tell you right now.
Here's what I see constantly. You hired an agency. Good people, you checked, you liked the work. And then you proceeded to do their job for them. You approve every caption. You rewrite the headline they wrote. A campaign sits for a week because it's good, but it's not exactly how you'd have done it. You send the 11pm message about the shade of blue. The strategy they proposed gets quietly overruled by your gut. And all of it feels like diligence. Like care. Like protecting your brand.
I get the instinct. Maybe you've been burned before. You paid an agency that needed babysitting, one that would have run your brand into a wall the moment you looked away. That's real, and it's a fair reason to keep your hands on the wheel.
But be honest about which situation you're actually in because there are only two.
You're paying an agency for their judgment. Their strategy, their instinct, their experience deciding what actually works.
Either the agency is bad, in which case controlling their every move won't fix it. It's a slow, expensive way of doing the work yourself while paying someone else to watch. Fire them and find people you'd actually trust.
Or the agency is good, and you're not letting them be good.
That second one is the expensive one, and it's the one almost nobody admits to. You're paying an agency for their judgment. Their strategy, their instinct, their experience deciding what actually works. And then you refuse to use any of it. You hired a partner and turned them into a pair of hands. You're paying premium prices for a vending machine.
And here's the cost you're not counting. Your brand now moves at the speed of your approvals, which means it barely moves at all, because you have an actual business to run. Every campaign waits in your inbox. Every decision routes back through the one person who's already too busy. You end up spending your most expensive hours on the exact work you hired an agency to take off your plate. You've made yourself the bottleneck in the system you built specifically so you wouldn't have to be.
So here's the fix, and it's simpler than it feels.
Stop judging the agency on whether they did it your way. Start judging them on whether it works. Give them the things only you can give: the real revenue goal, the truth of what your brand stands for, the lines they're not allowed to cross. Then hand them the how. Hold them accountable to the number, not to your taste. If sales move, who cares that they didn't use your shade of blue? And if sales don't move, you'll find out far faster than you would have buried in captions.
That's the whole shift: from approving the work to owning the outcome.
You brought in a partner so the brand could move without you carrying it. Let them carry it. Watch the results, not the brushstrokes.
You didn't hire an agency to become its art director. Step back up to your real job, and let the brand finally move.
